Prometheus Plays with Engine Fire

“Communicating the results of CFD analysis is critical to a successful project and our business.  It can be difficult to explain to someone not familiar with CFD what they are looking at.  The ease with which we can change views, compare different cases side-by-side, and create animations in EnSight allows us to provide the necessary perspective to our customers for a more successful presentation.  Furthermore, the ability to use macros to format the data is invaluable for reviewing results quickly and efficiently.  ”  Emmanuella Sotiropoulou, Vice President, Engineering Prometheus Applied Technologies, LLC

Improved Casting of a Transmission Housing Assembly

Comparison of New and Original Gating Configuration for Transmission Housing. FLOW-3D is the solver. Simulation visualization with EnSight. This example shows off EnSight’s ability to load in multiple models at once to compare and illustrate the improvements in the design. In addition, EnSight’s calculator function is used to generate an integral of the surface defect, and then plot that as a developing graph to illustrate the temporal change and comparison of the surface defects.

Improved Casting of a Transmission Housing Assembly

Animation of new Gating configuration from a FLOW-3D simulation in EnSight. Illustration of EnSight’s ability to embed external video footage straight into the viewport, and link up in time with the solution so that users can visualize both the simulation results as well as the external animation (experimental footage, computational solution from eons ago, etc).

Improved Casting of a Transmission Housing Assembly

Surface defect quantity on the surface of the casting simulation. Solution done with FLOW-3D, while animation is made with EnSight. Cast itself is shown as a transparent surface, while the fluid flowing into the cavity is shown, colored with surface defect. Areas of high surface defect indicate potential failures in the casting.

Improved Casting of a Transmission Housing Assembly

Locating the maximum surface defect during the casting process of a transmission housing. The dynamic 3D arrow follows the location of Maximum defect further drawing the audience in to understand the locations and movements of this quantity. With this visually represented as well as an integral of surface defect depicted in the graph (also calculated using EnSight), the audience can quickly be drawn to the areas of interest. Simulation results from FLOW-3D, and animation created with EnSight.

Improved Casting of a Transmission Housing Assembly

EnSight animation of a transmission housing cast process. Solution obtained using FLOW-3D, and animation made with EnSight. Here, EnSight’s keyframe capability is used to take the user around the solution and take the audience to the locations of interest in the simulation (where the surface defects are large). Integration of the surface defect is obtained using EnSight’s calculator functions, and then plotted on the graph right in the viewport.

Improved Casting of a Transmission Housing Assembly

Surface temperatures from a simulation of a transmission housing assembly. Solution obtained with FLOW-3D, and animation done with EnSight. Both the original and new design are shown at once to further aid in the comparison of the designs and visual quantification of the improvement. The graph in the lower right corner depicts the integral of surface defect in the solution and serves both as a comparison capability as well as a quantification of the improvement in designs.

Combining Separate EnSight Case Files into a Single Transient Case File

Combining separate EnSight Case Format files, and create a new EnSight .case file which loads all of the previous EnSight format files as a transient model. This simple modification of the .case file allows EnSight to read all of the files as a single transient run.

Combining two sequential simulation datasets in EnSight

Using Sequential Timesets in EnSight. In this situation, Case 1 has time = 1 to time =20, while Case 2 has time = 20 to time = 40. This illustrates one way of correctly moving through time in EnSight, for both Created and Model parts.

Multiple Rotating Reference Frames (MRF)

Using EnSight’s RIGID BODY MOTION capability for Multiple Rotating Reference Frame (MRF). This turns a single steady state solution into a transient model for EnSight, allowing the only true correct pathline integration, and an easy method to animate the moving geometry. Uses RBM Setup from User Tools. This capability is useful for any MRF solution, like that typical in Fan, Pumps, HVAC, Stir Tanks, etc.

Animation generated by Martin Faber

Flow3D Dam

This is a simple animation demonstrating a few of EnSight’s capabilities. All of the water parts are colored by Water Depth, while the land parts are colored by Elevation. Each variable has an independent color palette. The dam itself is an STL model. The animation first does a 360 fly-around to show the model, then moves overhead to show a transient animation. This simulation only has 4 time steps, so interpolation is used to create a slightly longer and smoother animation. The effectiveness of interpolation within EnSight is model-dependent. The better the time resolution is the better the interpolated steps will look.

The analysis was performed by Flow3D.
